Vulnerable koalas need national protection

The Australian Greens are calling on Federal Environment Minister Peter Garrett to immediately list the koala as a vulnerable species until more information about the nation-wide numbers and health is known.

In Sydney with NSW Senate candidate Lee Rhiannon today, Australian Greens Leader Bob Brown said a national inquiry into long-term health of koala populations is needed.

In the Senate the Australian Greens will move to introduce national mandatory water efficiency standards for residential and commercial buildings after the federal election.

Visiting the Darling Downs today Australian Greens Leader Bob Brown said the Greens would stand up for farming communities against multinational mining companies.

Senator Brown met with Glenn Beutel, the last resident of the town of Acland (former pop. 250) after the buy up of all other properties by coal mining companies.

The Australian Greens today announced a new plan to protect the Coral Sea environment from oil and gas extraction, unsustainable fishing and pollution.

Australian Greens Leader Bob Brown said a new Coral Sea Marine Reserve would protect one of Australia's most magnificent marine areas.

"The Coral Sea is home to many endangered species including but only 1% is protected," said Senator Brown.

At this National Press Club I acknowledge the traditional owners of the Canberra region and all the Indigenous people of our nation.

This year will be another milestone in politics for the Australian Greens. The sole balance of power in the Senate and a breakthrough into the House of Representatives are both within reach.
